In this review, Robin Miller, BDR for Horizon, demonstrates how the Exmark Commercial 30 lawn mower is able to double the productivity of a 21" mower, which can save your crew hours every week.

Good morning I’m Robin Miller with Horizon.

I’m here today to talk about the Exmark 30”. It’s called the Commercial 30. And believe me folks, it’s a game changer. All we’ve had up to now is a 21” mower or a 36” mower. And nothing really in between for those in between sized jobs and this mower is perfect for that.

If you’ve got areas that are long and skinny, long parkways that take several passes with a 21” mower, you can do it in fewer passes with this machine. If you have areas between the sidewalk and the curb with lots of maneuvering and lots of trees and things to go around, this mower will save you time and save you effort. If it takes you an hour to do a job with a 21” mower, you can do the same job in 30 minutes with this mower.

Parts & Accessories

The grass catcher comes on and off the machine really easily and it’s quite a bit bigger than the old traditional 21” grass catcher. So it will hold a lot more grass.

If you want to mulch with the machine, take the catcher off and put in the mulching plug. Which comes in the box with it. And you’re mulching.

You’ll be able to mow 7 days of grass mowing. In one pass, it chops the clipping up really fine. It hides them in the standing turf. Where you don’t see the clippings at all. It’s a very effective mulching mower. Imagine the time that you’ll save not having to dump the grass clippings from the machine.

It’s got a big, strong self-propelled system and it’s got a brand new gear box. The old gear box was a 3 speed gear box. It had a lever that selected three gears and had a neutral.
This is a very simple old school, robust one speed gear box. It actually has a variable comb clutch inside it. And it drives the mower at about 1 mile an hour faster than any 21” inch mower. It mows at about 4 ½ miles an hour. So it’s really fast and it’s a very simple and robust drive system.

That was the problem with some of the older mowers of this mid-sized variety over the years. The drive system was taken from a 21” mower and it wasn’t strong enough to drive a bigger, heavier 30” mower. This is really a key to this mower’s success. The self-propelled system.

You engage the drive just with this lever. There’s no shifting or anything else. You grab the lever. The farther you squeeze it, the faster it goes. Up to 4 ½ miles an hour. And it’s very easy to control very precisely the speed forward.

The engine on it. It’s a good old school about 6.5 hp Kawasaki FJ 180 Series engine. 180 cc’s. It’s a 4 stroke engine, so you add oil. And it even has its own oil filter just like on your car.

The air filter is easy to get in to. No tools required to clean the air filter. The starter is on top. It’s held on with four screws. So that’s easy to repair. It’s got a big one gallon gas tank. So you’ll go most of the day on a tank of fuel with this mower.

Operation & Productivity

The mower has a blade break clutch which is a clutch between the engine and blade that allows you to start the engine by itself. The blades are not turning yet.

To turn the blades on, it takes two motions and that’s an OSHA requirement. One motion on this little lever here and one motion to make the blades go. And the blades are going, ready to go. To drive forward, your hands are in position to grab the drive bale. And you’re going forward really fast.

When you release this bale, the blades stop, but the engine remains running. So you don’t have to keep restarting the engine all day. It’s a very simple and robust system and it’s very convenient to use.

The whole mower really adds up to have productivity in mind. Again, if it takes you an hour to mow with a 21” mower, you can mow with this mower in about 30 minutes. Same size.

Three things contribute to that speed: The extra 9 inches of width, the bigger grass catcher, and the faster drive speed. All of those combine to make this double the productivity of any 21” mower.
