If you’re following these rules, you’re probably going to get a really good quality cut. But in some cases, you still may get some clumps. Clumps is what we call failed mulching. You’ll see big old toupees of laying on top of your lawn in some cases.

If you’re getting clumps, there’s a few things you can do.

Number one: You can cross cut. You can mow it twice essentially. And with the really fast riders we have nowadays, there’s enough time for you to cross-cut a lawn in both directions in one visit.

Raise the height of your mower. Cut it up about a 1/2” higher or one notch on your adjusters. You’ll be processing a lot less grass and you’ll make more room to hide the clippings in the standing turf.

You can also slow the pace down. If you’re getting clumps, just drive it slower if you can. Give it more time for the mower to chop the clippings up and hide them in the standing turf.

And, of course, wait later in the day. If you’re getting clumps, it’s probably because the grass is too wet. Wait an hour or two and wait for the grass to dry before you try to cut.
